No, you do not need to take Extended Maths first. However, Additional Maths assumes strong algebra skills and mathematical maturity. Most students take Extended Maths alongside Additional Maths, or complete Extended Maths first. The Additional Maths syllabus covers topics not found in Extended Maths.
The IGCSE Additional Maths syllabus (0606) covers: functions, quadratic functions, equations and inequalities, indices and surds, factors of polynomials, simultaneous equations, logarithmic and exponential functions, straight line graphs, circular measure, trigonometry, permutations and combinations, series (binomial theorem), vectors in two dimensions, differentiation, integration, and kinematics.
Group formulae by topic, create a master formula sheet, and practise applying each formula to past paper questions. Additional Maths does not provide a formula sheet in the exam, so you must memorise everything. Write the formulae from memory daily and test yourself with timed recall drills.
Master differentiation and integration separately. For differentiation, learn the power rule, chain rule, and how to find gradients, turning points, and rates of change. For integration, learn the reverse power rule and how to find areas under curves. Practise at least five calculus questions every revision session.
IGCSE Additional Maths (0606) has two papers. Paper 1 is 2 hours long. Paper 2 is also 2 hours long. Both papers are worth 50% of the final grade. Calculators are allowed in both papers. There is no coursework or practical component.
Focus on past papers, complete one full paper every two days under timed conditions. Review every mistake and redo the questions you got wrong. Prioritise calculus, trigonometry, and functions as these carry the most marks. Spend the last week before the exam day reviewing formula recall and common errors.
