The most frequently tested topics are algebra (especially factorisation and solving equations), trigonometry (right-angled and non-right-angled), geometry (circle theorems and Pythagoras), statistics (mean, median, mode, and probability), and graphs (linear, quadratic, and distance-time). These topics appear in nearly every paper, year after year.
The most difficult topics are circle theorems, vectors, transformations, trigonometry (especially sine and cosine rules), and algebraic fractions. These topics require visualisation, multi-step reasoning, or precise algebraic manipulation. Practise past paper questions specifically on these topics.
Yes, Cambridge provides a formula sheet for IGCSE Extended Maths. It includes formulas for area, volume, trigonometry, and statistics. However, it does not include every formula you need; there are certain formulas, such as circle theorems, Pythagoras, and basic algebra, that you must memorise on your own.
IGCSE Extended Maths is graded from A* to G. Students who take the Extended syllabus are eligible for the full range of grades, including A*. The Core syllabus only goes up to grade C. Most students aiming for university admission take Extended Maths to achieve an A* to B.
IGCSE Extended Maths has two papers. Paper 2 is 1 hour and 30 minutes, worth 35% of the total grade, and consists of short-answer questions. Paper 4 is 2 hours 30 minutes, worth 65% of the total grade, and consists of structured long-answer questions. You can use calculators in both papers.
Complete one full past paper every two days under timed conditions. Review every mistake and redo the questions you got wrong. Focus on high-mark topics such as algebra, trigonometry, and statistics. Use the formula sheet during practice so you become familiar with it. Spend the final week reviewing past paper mistakes only.
