Cambridge designs Additional Mathematics (0606) for high-ability learners who have achieved, or are likely to achieve, a strong grade in standard IGCSE Mathematics, so most schools recommend a solid foundation in core maths topics before starting. While it's possible to study Additional Mathematics independently, having strong algebra, trigonometry, and graph-handling skills beforehand makes the introduction to topics like Calculus and Logarithmic Functions far less overwhelming.
IGCSE Additional Mathematics (0606) has 2 papers, both written papers lasting 2 hours each with a calculator allowed. Paper 1 focuses on shorter and structured questions across the syllabus, while Paper 2 tends to include longer, more extended problems that often combine multiple topics, such as applying calculus techniques within a coordinate geometry question.
The Calculus introduced in Additional Mathematics covers basic differentiation and integration techniques and their applications, acting as an early foundation for the more advanced Calculus found in A Level Mathematics. While the IGCSE version is less extensive, building genuine comfort with the fundamentals here, rather than memorising steps, makes the transition to A Level Pure Mathematics significantly smoother if you continue with Maths afterwards.
While Cambridge doesn't publish fixed weightings per topic, Algebra-related areas (including Quadratic Functions, Equations, Inequalities and Graphs, and Simultaneous Equations) tend to underpin questions across both papers, since they're frequently combined with newer topics like Trigonometry and Calculus. Building strong algebraic fluency early in the year typically pays off across multiple topics rather than just one.
The Freemium Plan gives limited access to Interactive Videos and Diagnostic Reports for introductory chapters only. The Premium Plan unlocks all 14 topics, including full access to Interactive Videos, downloadable Revision Notes, Diagnostic Reports for every chapter, and additional Tutor Credits to generate Testpapers or get feedback from a Subject Tutor.
