Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

A Level Economics (9708) has 4 papers. AS Level candidates sit Paper 1 (Multiple Choice) and Paper 2 (AS Data Response & Essays). A2 Level candidates then sit Paper 3 (Multiple Choice) and Paper 4 (A2 Data Response & Essays). The data response and essay papers carry the most weight in terms of skill development, since they test your ability to apply economic theory to unfamiliar real-world contexts.

Strong evaluation means weighing up both sides of an argument and reaching a clear, justified conclusion, rather than simply listing more points. Command words like “discuss,” “evaluate,” and “assess” specifically signal that you need to consider counterarguments, factors that could change your conclusion, and the relative importance of different effects. Practising past Data Response & Essay questions and comparing your answers against the Mark Scheme is the fastest way to see what separates a basic explanation from a well-evaluated answer.

Microeconomics topics, covered early in AS Level and revisited at A2, focus on individual markets, firms, and consumer behaviour, including demand and supply, market structures, and government intervention in specific markets. Macroeconomics topics deal with the economy as a whole, covering national income, inflation, unemployment, fiscal and monetary policy, and international trade. Both strands reappear at A2 Level in more depth, so a solid grasp of the AS fundamentals makes the A2 content significantly easier to follow.

Data response questions require you to use the given extract or data directly in your answer rather than writing generic economic theory, since examiners specifically reward responses that reference the source material. A good approach is practising with real past data response questions, annotating the data first to identify key trends, and then linking your economic explanation directly back to what the data shows. Reviewing Mark Schemes after each attempt helps you see exactly how marks are split between knowledge, application, analysis, and evaluation.
